Webster's Dictionary

[edit]

This page gives a great deal of credit to Springfield in regards to Webster's dictionary. However, George Merriam merely acquired the rights to the dictionary in 1843 - 37 years after its original publication. The first edition was published by a New York man - the second by Webster himself, both were printed in New Haven, CT. This page should be amended to reflect that Merriam-Webster is the current publisher of the first dictionary, not as stated "Springfielders produced many innovations, including the first American-English dictionary (1805, Merriam-Webster)" as this is untrue. Noah Webster was born and lived in Connecticut for most of his life, including the period when his dictionary was first published. 162.136.192.1 (talk) 15:21, 30 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
